Askernish Golf Day

The course

Askernish is a course like no other, a genuine hidden gem which is steeped in history.

The world-renowned golf course designer and founder of the modern game, Old Tom Morris came to South Uist in 1891 to create a course at the request of the wealthy landowner, Lady Cathcart, so she could impress her high society guests.

She certainly chose the right man for the job, having also designed or redesigned several of the world's greatest courses, among them Muirfield, Prestwick, and Carnoustie, in Scotland, and Royal County Down, in Northern Ireland.

Old Tom created an 18-hole course that was maintained by the local crofters until the early 1920s when the demand for the game and social pressures on the local people meant that maintaining the land was not viable.

The next 80 years

Over the next 80 years Old Tom’s creation became wild and over-grown – with fears it would never be played again.

In 2005 a group of locals decided that they wanted it to bring it back to life, setting to work, with the help of some of the sport’s biggest and best names, restoring this ’lost’ course. Three years later it was reopened as an 18-hole course which has received the highest acclaim from golfing media and beyond.

Askernish begins with a 6-hole loop which includes two par 5s. These holes give you a gentle start where undulating greens and large elevation changes provide the challenges to prepare players for the next 12 holes. Once at the 7th tee the wild Atlantic Ocean meets the horizon, with views of Barra in the distance while navigating one of golf’s most amazing dune systems.
