Travel to Orkney
A world of a difference
As you fly north over Scotland, scan beyond the rugged north coast and you’ll soon see Orkney’s archipelago, 70 islands strong. There lie treasures, in prehistoric sites, in the clifftop and seashore scenery, in birdlife, in food and drink and in the warm hospitality of the people.
A genuinely breath-taking place, Orkney boasts the greatest concentration of prehistoric sites in western Europe. Visit the 5,000-year-old Neolithic village of Skara Brae (complete with stone beds and chairs), the Viking-graffitied Maeshowe Tomb, the Standing Stone Circle of Stenness … so many archaeological gems, you’ll need another 5,000 years to see them all. Don’t miss St Magnus Cathedral in Kirkwall, or the infinitely humbler (but every bit as uplifting) Italian Chapel, built by Italian POWs in the 1940s.
Birdwatchers flock here...
... attracted by the million seabirds. The surrounding seas, shores and skerries are home to seals, otters and dolphins. Below the waters of Scapa Flow are wrecks of the German Grand Fleet, scuttled in 1919 and now providing fascinating diving grounds. Above you, watch for the magical aurora borealis.
Irresistible fare awaits, in local cheeses, beef, seafood, beers, whiskies and handcrafted gin. Escape to Orkney, just north of Scotland’s mainland and out of this world.
Loganair provides scheduled flights Edinburgh to Orkney, as well as from Inverness, Glasgow and Sumburgh (Shetland). We also operate scheduled island-hopping flights within Orkney, linking Mainland with the isles of Eday, North Ronaldsay, Sanday, Stronsay, Westray and Papa Westray. Flying between Westray and Papa Westray doesn’t take long – it’s the world’s shortest scheduled flight, taking under two minutes depending on the wind. Click below for more information on Orkney Inter island flights.
Skara Brae
Skara Brae is a stone-built Neolithic settlement, located on the Bay of Skaill on the west coast of Mainland, the largest island in the Orkney archipelago of Scotland. Consisting of eight clustered houses, it was occupied from roughly 3180 BC to about 2500 BC and is Europe's most complete Neolithic village.
The Stones of Stenness
The Stones of Stenness make up one of the four Heart of Neolithic Orkney sites. Four upright stones up to 6m in height stand in a circle that originally held 12 stones. The stones are thought to be the oldest stone circle in the British Isles!
