Travel to Bristol
Brunel to Banksy, music to meandering and more
For everyone – couples, families, groups of friends alike – Bristol has magnificent attractions that will entertain, inform and divert.
The countless things to see and do might start with marvels of Victorian engineering such as the Clifton Suspension Bridge and the legendary Isambard Kingdom Brunel’s astonishing ship, the SS Great Britain. Or if you prefer your inspiration to be more off (or should that be on) the wall, then you’re in the hometown of the notorious serial graffiti artist Banksy. Fittingly there’s street art everywhere, along with historic houses, cinemas, museums, the beautiful Cathedral and no fewer than 400 picturesque parks and gardens, including Bristol Zoo Gardens
Visit the historic Harbourside...
... and make time to go to the M Shed, a treasure trove of museum memorabilia amongst the dockside cranes. And you’ll see a lot of Wallace & Gromit, with creator Nick Park’s Aardman studios based there.
As one of the most vibrant, happening cities in the UK, Bristol is blessed with memorable nightlife and a burgeoning underground music scene. If sport is your thing, you’ll appreciate watching the local high-calibre rugby and cricket, or taking exercise yourself in rock climbing, biking, walking and more (we’re not certain that the Heritage Pub Crawl counts as walking, but it’s a good shout). Take a boat trip, perhaps, or if you’d rather just rise above it all, hot air ballooning is popular too in summer. Fly to Bristol and go out of this world.
SS Great Britain
SS Great Britain is a visitor attraction and museum ship in Bristol Harbour, with between 150,000 and 200,000 visitors annually. Designed by Isambard Kingdom Brunel for the Great Western Steamship Company's transatlantic service between Bristol and New York, she was the most advanced in the world for her time.
The Bristol Harbour Festival
The Bristol Harbour Festival is the biggest event to take place within the city’s boundaries. It’s free for all and brings over 250,000 people together to celebrate the city’s rich maritime history and enjoy some of the city’s best music and entertainment. Tall ships, music stages, dance areas, food markets, water display teams and circus acts combine to ensure that everywhere you turn, there’s something to delight and entertain.
