Travel to Bergen

Old-world charm, modern comforts, timeless appeal

The second city of Norway - known as the Gateway to the Fjords - offers a first-class choice of things to see and do, all bound up in a remarkable mix of history, tradition, culture and marvellous panoramic views.

Stroll around ...

... the old and colourful Hanseatic wharf of the area called Bryggen and you’re walking into the Middle Ages, amid old wooden houses, quaint alleyways and steep cobbled streets – all so picturesque and notable, they’re on UNESCO’s World Heritage List. If you prefer your Middle Ages served with shops, cafes and bars, then all the better, they’re here. Walk the length of Bryggen to Bergenhus fortress, explore the charming Nordnes and Sandviken districts, take in one of the many galleries and museums, or call by the home of composer Edvard Grieg, and you’re just starting to make the most of Bergen’s attractions.

Cable car and funicular trips can carry you up into some of the seven imposing mountains that cradle the city. You can go walking, kayaking, rafting, fishing, segwaying and more, and if the exercise and fresh North Sea air pique your appetite, that’s okay, because Bergen is renowned for its seafood, lamb and game dishes. Put this city on the sea on your must-see list – book flights Edinburgh to Bergen today.
